Jonathan Davis scored on a 4-yard run with 1:52 left in the game to give Tucker a 10-7 lead, then Lorenzo Bryson picked off Southwest DeKalb’s Daniel Litt with 35 seconds left to preserve the victory Saturday night.
The outcome secured the second seed in Region 6-AAAA for the Tigers, who saw Bryson’s interception cap a final quarter that featured two lead changes in the last 4:11 after both teams struggled on offense all night.
“They had [Jeremy Barnett] at fullback,”
Bryson said of his game-clinching interception. “Whenever they had him at fullback, they did something funky. I kept looking at him and went at him thinking I would make the tackle. I looked up, saw the ball coming and just got to it.”
Tucker scored the first half’s only points on a 35-yard Ricky Peacock field goal with 2:47 left in the half.
“People may call this a defensive struggle,”
Tucker coach Franklin Stephens said. “But it was an offensive struggle. It was two offenses struggling against two very good defenses.”
Davis led Tucker (8-1, 7-1) with 90 yards on 16 carries while Drayton Calhoun added 80 yards on 21 carries. Southwest is 6-3, 6-2.
